Registration number first

  • Look for Regn. No. / HMC / MCI / DMC on the stamp.
  • Ask reception for the number if it is missing.
  • Name-only NMC search often fails when many doctors share a name.

If many doctors match

  • Add hospital / locality (e.g. Fortis, Sector-44, Gurugram).
  • Add qualification (MBBS, MD…).
  • Match the full record — don’t pick the first similar name.

How to verify in 3 steps

Get the registration number

Upload the prescription (we read the doctor stamp) or copy Regn. No. from the stamp / letterhead / reception. This beats a name-only search.

Confirm details on the form

Check name, hospital, and city. If many doctors share a name, those extra details help you match the right record.

Search the official NMC register

Paste the registration number into the National Medical Commission Indian Medical Register (free) and match the full record.

What the result means

Registered

The doctor appears in the register with matching details. This confirms registration — it is not a comment on the quality of their care.

Unable to verify

You couldn’t find a clear match. This does NOT mean the doctor is unqualified. Records for doctors registered before digitisation can be missing, names vary, and AYUSH practitioners are on separate councils. Try the State Medical Council directly.

Registry action on record

The register shows a suspension or disciplinary note. Note the details and raise a grievance with the relevant council.

One important rule: “Unable to verify” is not proof that someone is a fake or unqualified — registries lag and records vary. We never call a person a “quack.” If you genuinely suspect someone is practising without qualifications, report it to the authorities rather than accusing them publicly.

Can’t find them on NMC?

Older registrations and some specialities sit with the State Medical Council where the doctor practises. AYUSH doctors (Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani) are registered with separate councils. Check the relevant council’s own website before drawing any conclusion.

Suspect a fake doctor?

Don’t confront or accuse publicly. Report suspected quackery to the Civil Surgeon’s anti-quackery cell and the police. We can help you prepare the complaint.
