How to verify a doctor in India — free, step by step
Anyone can put “Dr.” before their name. In a few minutes, you can check whether they appear on the official medical register.

You are about to trust someone with your health — or your child’s. The clinic looks clean. The visiting card says MD. The receptionist is confident. Still: is this person actually registered to practise medicine in India?
That question is not paranoia. It is basic due diligence. The good news: you can answer it for free, using the government’s own records. This guide walks you through it — then points you to ourVerify a Doctor tool if you want the short path.
What “verified” means (and what it doesn’t)
On doctorrating.in, verification means the practitioner appears in an official registration record — typically the National Medical Commission’s Indian Medical Register, or a State Medical Council register.
It does not mean the doctor is “the best,” that every review is perfect, or that treatment will go well. Registration is the floor, not the ceiling. But without that floor, you are guessing.
Registration confirmation is not a quality rating. It is proof that the system at least knows who they are.
What to gather before you search
- Full name as written on the prescription or clinic board (spellings vary).
- City / state where they practise — useful when filtering by council.
- Registration number if it is printed on the prescription or letterhead (most reliable).
- Qualification if known (MBBS, MD, MS, etc.) — helps you match the right record.
Step-by-step: NMC Indian Medical Register
- Open the official register. Go to the National Medical Commission’sIndian Medical Register(free). Prefer the government site over random “doctor search” apps.
- Search by registration number first if you have it. If not, search by full name and narrow by the State Medical Council where they practise.
- Match the whole record — name, registration date, qualification, and council — against the doctor you are seeing. Do not stop at a similar-looking name.

How to read the result
- Registered (details match): The person appears in the register with matching information. This confirms registration — not the quality of care.
- Unable to verify: No clear match. This does not automatically mean they are fake. Older digitisation gaps, spelling variants, and separate AYUSH councils are common. Try the State Medical Council next.
- Suspension / disciplinary note: Note the details carefully. Raise a grievance with the relevant council if needed — our Complaints tool can help you route it.
Gotchas that trip up Indian patients
- Spelling: Sharma / Sarma, Mohamed / Mohammed — try alternate spellings.
- Pre-digitisation records: Some older registrations are incomplete online.
- AYUSH practitioners: Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani, etc. sit on separate councils — not always on the NMC allopathic register.
- Name-only search noise: Common names return many hits. Prefer registration number + state filter.
If you still cannot verify
- Ask the clinic politely for the doctor’s registration number and council.
- Check the State Medical Council website for that state.
- If you genuinely suspect illegal practice, report through official channels — do not accuse someone of being a “quack” on social media. Use Complaints to find the right door.
After you verify
Registration is step one. You still deserve clear communication, fee transparency, and dignity in care. For insurance denials, discharge delays, complaint fees, and more, start at ourPatient Rights hub. And remember: AI is not your doctor — chatbots do not replace a registered practitioner.
Quick FAQ
Is NMC verification free?
Yes. The official National Medical Commission Indian Medical Register is free to search.
Does a match mean the doctor is good?
No. A match confirms registration on the official register. It is not a rating of clinical quality.
What if the doctor’s name is common?
Use the registration number if available, filter by state council, and match qualification and other details — do not stop at a similar-looking name.
Can doctorrating.in verify a doctor for me?
We show you how and link the official register. We do not invent a private “verified” badge that replaces the government record. WhatsApp support can help you walk the steps.
